Proven Safety System Print Version

Proven Safety System

The Andritz safety philosophy for drying plants was derived from a number of risk assessments and by applying European legislation and guidelines. According to EN 1127-1, “Flammable and/or combustible substances shall be considered as materials which can form an explosive atmosphere unless an investigation of their properties has shown that in mixtures with air they are incapable of self–sustained propagation of an explosion.”

The dust derived from sewage sludge drying processes forms - in combination with air - an explosive atmosphere and therefore Andritz considers and assesses this possibility by investigating and implementing specific fire and explosion prevention or protection measures.

Some of the standards applied to Andritz drying plants:

  • Machinery directive 98/37/EC
  • Guideline concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX guideline) 94/9/EC
  • Explosive atmospheres – explosion prevention and protection EN 1127-1
  • Non electrical equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres EN 13463
  • Safety of machinery – Principles for risk assessment EN 1050
  • Pressure venting of dust explosions VDI 3673
  • HSE guideline 847/9
  • EC guideline 1999/92/EC

As an example, preventive and protective measures for the process step Preseparator / Polycyclone in the drying plant are shown.
