Arapucel (formed by private Brazilian groups Brennand and Koblitz) has signed a contract with VA TECH Hydro Brazil in May 2001 for the design, supply, installation, commissioning and assistance during the first month of operation of two 10.3 MW horizontal Francis turbines, including two complete governing systems and butterfly valves. This project has been put on hold due to the financial situation of the former owner which appears to be typical for many hydro projects in Brazil.
The new private owner, motivated by higher energy prices due to the present energy crisis in the country, is pressuring for quick completion of the project. Commissioning of the first unit was made mid 2002, only 12 months from the award of the contract. Despite the use of a very similar existing Compact Hydro turbine design, this project requires very efficient contract management in every phase of the work in order to achieve the short completion schedule.
VA TECH HYDRO Brazil is responsible for the detailed engineering drawings, the procurement activities and contract management from its headquarters in Sao Paulo. The runners are supplied by VA TECH HYDRO in Grenoble, while the fabrication of the turbines, valves and governing systems have been subcontracted to qualified local suppliers, under our coordination and supervision.
An excellent performance in the execution of this order may result in additional future contracts. The same client has just issued the tender documents for another 30 MW power plant and many new projects will follow.
