By the end of 2002, the private company Société Hydroélectrique du Golo in Corsica (France) has awarded VA TECH HYDRO in France the engineering and manufacturing contract for one ECOBulb™ unit of 2.5 MW to be installed on the river Golo, just south of Bastia. The decisive arguments in favour of the ECOBulb™ technical solutions were the absence of step-up gear, the high overall efficiency and the low-maintenance design.

The maximum integration in the narrow gorge as well as the possibility to have the turbo generator submerged in case of flood supported the other features. During the engineering phase, VA TECH HYDRO has also conducted several optimisation steps of the water passages and improved the flow pattern at the entrance of the unit while using CFD calculations.
