Brazil is at the moment in a phase of intensive construction activities in the sector of hydroelectric power plants.
The project is located on the Sapucai River in Sao Paulo state. The client CPFL is a privatised power utility. The project includes the total renovation of two existing power stations. The old generating units is replaced by completely new, modern units with increased output. The necessary civil works are carried out in a consortium with Camargo Correa as partner company, the overall engineering being done by the Brazilian engineering company Intertechne.
In the Dourados power station, one vertical Francis turbine will be installed. In the offer phase, an alternative with a Kaplan unit had been studied. At most projects with this net head, the Kaplan unit would be advantageous. For the specific conditions of Dourados the Francis unit turned out to be more economic due to the rather constant flow and space restrictions within the walls of the old powerhouse.
The overall project management is done by the Brazilian company ENERG in Belo Horizonte with accompanying support from Europe. Almost all components are manufactured by Brazilian companies. The generators are built in Jaragua do Sul by our licensee WEG with the technical backup from VA TECH HYDRO of Austria. The Francis Runner for Dourados has been welded from corrosion resistant steel G-X 5 Cr Ni 13 4.
