In Feb 2001 Great Lakes Power Inc. signed a Design/Build Contract with the McNamara-AMEC Joint Venture for the construction of a new hydropower plant at the existing High Falls Generating Station in Northern California.
VA TECH HYDRO (namely VA TECH ESCHER WYSS Canada) is subcontractor to the JV and will supply and install the complete water-to-wire equipment.
The new High Falls Generating Station constists of two Kaplan turbine generating units. VA TECH HYDRO is responsible for the overall project management, the pocurement of the governors and electrical systems, the installation and the commissioning. We will also do the turbine design, the supply and the procurement of generators. VA TECH T&D will supply the main transformers.
Great Lakes Power is the largest private investor in Ontario.
The original High Falls Generating Station went into service in 1930 and was expanded to a capacity of 24 MW in 1950. The retrofitting will increase the capacity to 45 MW and includes a new dam, spillway, power canal, penstock and powerhouse.
