In May 2002, VA TECH HYDRO was awarded a contract by Vereinigte Wertach Elektrizitätswerke (VWEW) to supply and commission a vertical CAK 1600/k4 Kaplan turbine including generator, hydraulic governor, and turbine control system.
The existing plant, erected in 1924 and equipped with a horizontal Francis turbine, no longer met today´s power generation standards.
The buildings had to be reconstructed, refurbished and expanded to accommodate the new machine.
The existing and now defunct generator turbine unit will remain in the powerhouse as a showpiece.
The new TC1703 turbine governor was installed for plant control. The entire hydraulic steel structures were also integrated into the control system. The power plant was commissioned in October 2003 with the trial run to follow. Final inspection took place in December 2003.
