In November 2003, VA TECH HYDRO in France was entrusted with the rehabilitation of the hydroelectric power plant in-Mandraka, Madagascar. Restart is planned for November 2004.
The Furry Creek generating station will house one single vertical 4 jet Pelton turbine including a synchronous generator, inlet valve and electrical, control and protection equipment. The engineer is Sigma Engineering of Vancouver B.C.
The client is the public company JIRO SY RANO MALAGASY (JIRAMA). The project has been developed with European financing (BEI). The project is situated 70 km from Antananarivo, on the road linking the capital with the harbour of Toamasina. The head of Mandraka, the river by the same name, uses a first drop of 250 m with 70 million m3 deriving from Mantasoa, to which a contribution of 55 million m3 of the Mandraka is added.
Mantasoa is located at the border of the first step of the Eastern cliff in the proximity of the watershed. The power station is currently equipped with four Vevey Pelton units installed in 1958 (unit power 6 MW) for a head of 250 m.
Each group is equipped with two runners on the same turbine shaft, with two injectors per runner. The rehabilitation principally includes the supply of four new Pelton runners, two newturbine shafts, four new oil tanks with accumulators, two new speed governors, the rehabilitation of mechanical components as well as an electrical assembly comprising transformers, switchgear and electrical equipment with our partner CEGELEC.
This project is very important for the island of Madagascar because it represents on its own 12% of the installed electrical power alone. This rehabilitation concerning the four groups (with different supplies for each group) should therefore be done step by step in order to maintain maximum power generation during the construction period. VA TECH HYDRO in France will lead this project to the end using all the competences of the VA TECH HYDRO group to ensure the quality required under the terms of contract.
