Major orders for shapemeter rolls from China and India

Graz/Hemer, 26 March 2007. Andritz Sundwig, based in Hemer, Germany, a member of international technology group Andritz, received an order from Jindal Stainless Ltd., New Delhi, India, for supply of five shapemeter rolls with tungsten-carbide coated surface for use in 20-high rolling mills in the production of stainless steel strip.

Andritz Sundwig will also supply two shape control systems with two shapemeter rolls each for the 6-high mill stands of Bhushan Steel & Strips Ltd., New Delhi, India, for the production of carbon steel strip.

A further order was awarded to Andritz Sundwig for the supply of two shape control systems with two shapemeter rolls each for a customer in China.  The shapemeter rolls are to be used in 20-high rolling mills for silicon steel strip at strip temperatures above 200°C.  To withstand the high strip temperatures, the shapemeter rolls are provided with tungsten-carbide coated roll surfaces.

With these orders, Andritz Sundwig again proves the operative capability of the new shapemeter roll type (A type) with its completely closed, gap-free and homogeneous surface.  The benefits derived from this design are: prevention of damage to the strip surface; optional coating with wear-resistant materials, e.g. tungsten carbide; ease of installation of the force sensors in axial drill holes; no calibration of the shapemeter roll on site.

At the strip edges, the shapemeter rolls are designed with sensor distances of only 25 mm, thus optimally determining high gradients of strip shape.  The maintenance-free roll electronics with digital optical rotation transmitter ensure highest precision and operational safety.

The model predictive control system developed by Andritz, which is suitable for all rolling mills, is used for strip shape control.  It can predict the future control behaviour of the process via an integrated model and clearly improves control quality compared to a conventional PID controller.  The shape actuators are pilot-controlled for improvement of the control result, especially at the strip head and the strip end.

Andritz Sundwig supplies Shape Control System for NLMK

Hemer, March, 2006 Andritz Sundwig, Hemer, Germany, a member of the Andritz Group has received an order from Novolipetsk Steel company (OJSC “NLMK”), Lipetsk, CIS to supply a shapemeter system for a tandem line for the production of silicon steel strips.

The scope of supply also includes a sectional selective roll cooling system, a drive system for the shapemeter roll as well as the turnkey integration of the system's components into the rolling line

For more than 24 years now, the experienced rolling mill manufacture Sundwig has built shapemeter systems according to the BFI system. So far, approximately 390 rolling lines have been equipped with more than 700 shapemeter rolls. The great number of shape measurement and control systems in use shows that the system has proven very well in various cases of application.

In this case, with strip temperatures of more than 2000C, the newly developed shapemeter roll type with completely closed gap-free and homogeneous roll surface was used. The advantages of this type of design are

  • avoidance of damage to the strip surface,
  • coating possibilities with wear-resistance materials, e.g. tungsten carbide,
  • simple installation of the force sensors in axially running bores,
  • no requirement of calibration of the shapemeter roll on the site.

With the shapemeter roll, high gradients of the strip shape in the strip edge area are optimally determined by sensor distances of only 25 mm.  The simple and rugged design of the solid measuring roll body as well as the maintenance-free roll electronics with digital, optical rotary transmitter guarantee the highest precision and operation safety.

The PC-based, modularly designed computer system for the shape measurement, control and visualization communicates via customized interfaces with the line control.

The model predictive control system developed by Andritz and applicable on all rolling lines can predict the future control behavior of the process by means of an integrated model and clearly improves the control quality compared to a conventional PID controller. The shape actuators are pilot controlled in order to improve the control result, especially at the strip head and the strip tail end.

Shape Control Systems for WISCO

As a supplier of significant system solutions for the cold rolling industry, SUNDWIG GmbH has been placed with an order by ALSTOM Power Conversion for the supply of two shape control systems, provided for 20-high rolling mills for the production of silicon steel strips for the ultimate customer Wuhan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd (WISCO) in China.

For more than 22 years, SUNDWIG builds as experienced rolling mill manufacturer shape control systems according to the BFI system. In this time, approx. 330 rolling lines have been equipped with more than 580 shape meter rolls. The great number of shape measurement and control systems being in use shows that the system has proven in the most various cases of application.

For this case of application with strip temperatures of more than 200° C, the newly developed shape meter roll type with completely closed gap-free and homogeneous roll surface is used. The advantages of this type of design are: The avoidance of damage to the strips; coating possibilities with wear-resistant materials, as e.g. tungsten carbide; simple installation of the force sensors in axially running bores; no requirement of calibration of the shape meter roll on the site.

With the shape meter rolls, high gradients of strip shape in the strip edge area are optimally determined by sensor distances of only 25 mm and a strip position detection system. The simple and rugged design of the solid measuring roll body as well as the maintenance-free roll electronics with digital optical rotary transmitter guarantee highest precision and operational safety.

The PC-based computer system of modular design for the shape measurement, control and visualization communicates via customized interfaces with the line controls.

The control algorithm usable on all rolling lines works adaptively, i.e. an adaptation of the actuator control parameters to the changing process statusses is automatically effected. The shape actuators are pilot controlled to improve the control result, especially at the strip head and the strip tail end.
