Pelton turbines

The solution for high head applications with more than 1,800 m

ANDRITZ HYDRO has supplied Pelton turbines with a head of more than 1,800 m and output more than 420 MW per unit. More than 1,300 large Pelton turbines with a total capacity of approx. 65,000 MW have been installed worldwide.

The shaft design can be either in horizontal position in combination with one or two nozzles per runner, or in vertical position with up to six nozzles per runner.

The water enters the turbine through the distribution pipe, which is a welded steel plate construction designed for the maximum pressure occurring. The nozzles are flanged to the distribution pipe, where the water discharge and therefore the turbine output can be adjusted via a needle actuated by an internal servomotor.

ANDRITZ HYDRO has invented various Pelton runner manufacturing methods, tailor-made to meet the customers’ needs.

  • Fully forged: The buckets are manufactured out of the runner disk.
  • HIWELDTM: Cast or forged bucket parts are welded onto the disk.
  • MicroGussTM: The buckets are overlay-welded onto the forged disk.
