Pump turbines

Proven technology and experience for the design of complex pump turbines

Pump turbines provide versatility in the harnessing of water power energy from potential to kinetic and conversely, from kinetic to potential, all based on incomparable performance and the highest of standards.

ANDRITZ HYDRO has the technology and proven expertise in the design, manufacture, supply, installation, commissioning and service of complex pump turbines. The multitude of configurations available include horizontal or vertical, single or multiple stage, fixed or variable speed, with or without cylindrical ring gate, and individual or combined actuation of guide vanes, all custom designed and built to meet the most demanding customer requirements and environmental criteria in pump storage applications worldwide.

Unique in their dual mode of operation, ANDRITZ HYDRO pump turbines with their ability to master rapid mode changes are ideally suited for generation as well as storage of energy, predestined to stabilize electrical grid fluctuations.

In essence, pump turbines are an amalgamation of Francis turbines and pumps with both modes of operation combined in one machine.

Turbine mode of operation

The pump turbine “absorbs” incoming water flow from its upper reservoir and, through rotation, drives its directly coupled generator-motor.

Pump mode of operation

The pump turbine, driven by its directly coupled motor-generator, “siphons” water from its lower reservoir back up to its upper reservoir, enabling the storage of energy for use later.
