ANDRITZ to deliver heat treatment plant for production of railway wheels to Kardemir, Turkey
International technology Group ANDRITZ has received an order from the Turkish steel producer Karabük Iron & Steel Industry and Trade (Kardemir) to supply a heat treatment plant for a wheel manufacturing line. The line will produce up to 200,000 high-grade railway wheels for high-speed trains.
Press supplier Schuler, Germany, member of the ANDRITZ GROUP since this year, will be the system supplier for the entire line which has an order value of around 90 million euros.
ANDRITZ Maerz, the industrial furnace equipment specialist in the ANDRITZ GROUP with headquarters in Düsseldorf, Germany, will supply the hardening, low-temperature, and rotary hearth furnaces as well as the hardening machine with the necessary handling technology for fully automated heat treatment of railway wheels. The internationally tried-and-tested heat treatment system with car bottom pusher-type furnaces developed by ANDRITZ Maerz fulfills the high requirements with respect to hardness and wheel structure values for railway wheels used for high-speed trains.
This order is the first joint project by ANDRITZ and the recently acquired Schuler Group, whose supplies include a newly developed wheel rolling machine that form the railway wheels from pre-forged blanks weighing up to 500 kilograms.
Kardemir is Turkey’s oldest steel producer (annual capacity: 3 million tons) and manufactures among others rails and points for high-speed railroad tracks. The Turkish government has announced that it plans to double the extent of the railroad network in Turkey to cover 25,000 kilometers by 2023.
