Francis turbines

The ideal choice for water power energy applications up to 800 MW per unit and a potential energy head range up to 700 m

Francis turbines are available in varying configurations, horizontal or vertical, with flexibility in design to ensure best efficiency and reliability of operation under the most extreme conditions.

ANDRITZ HYDRO Francis turbines are ideally suited for water power energy applications

  • Up to 800 MW per unit
  • Potential energy head range up to 700 m

Modes of operation range from steady state high-efficiency peak energy production at constant flow to synchronous condenser and phase shifting, all of which are based on uninterrupted and reliable operational behaviour.

The salient features of our Francis turbines include advantageous design and materials, such as maintenance-free moveable parts and hydrostatic shaft seal configurations, ensuring incomparable longevity, durability, and reliability.

Robustness and high fidelity, combined with ease of maintenance, are characteristic advantages of ANDRITZ HYDRO Francis turbines. Extensive research and development activities ensure best efficiency and maximum output, feasible over a wide range of operation, both in multiple and single-unit configurations.

Combined with robotically applied coating technology, the Francis turbine’s water-exposed, precision-machined surfaces are well protected from the most precarious operating environments, ranging from sand to larger abrasive water-submerged particles.

The Francis turbine is available as a stand-alone unit with integrated shut-off ring gate, separate upstream butterfly valve, or spherical valve. With proper preventive maintenance and inspections, the operational life cycle of ANDRITZ HYDRO turbines is excellent.
