Technical Publications: FE-based integrity analysis

FE-based Integrity analysis for the spiral casing of a storage Pump

D. Sadnik, W. Pinkas, J. Werderits, A. Drygas

Published: 14th Internationales Seminar Wasserkraftanlagen, Wien 2006
Date: November 2006

The cracks detected at weld seams in storage pump spiral casings are assessed in FE-calculations on the basis of the present operating mode and operating time, and this analysis is then used to determine the required repair measures.  Depending on the FE-model used, the operating strength analyses are conducted using proof of structural or notch stress.  The number of cycles-to-failure matches up with the existing structural damage. The measures presented relieve stress significantly at most of the points likely to suffer cracking, but at the same time, other areas at risk suffer slightly higher stress.  This effect can be counteracted effectively with a variety of additional measures so that reliable operations can also be guaranteed in the future.
