1805 Foundation of the company Escher Wyss in Zürich, Switzerland. Ever since the engineering of hydraulic turbomachinery for water power generation has been one of the core businesses throughout the company‘s long history.
1856 Foundation of the Escher Wyss site in Ravensburg, Germany, which, today, beyond its core activities in the water power generation is also the exclusive center of competence for Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs).
1934 First hydraulically operated controllable pitch propeller in the world for passenger vessel "Etzel".
It may be surprising that a company 500 miles away from the sea at a given point of time extends its product range into the marine business. However, it is the relationship to the water turbine which leads the Ravensburg site to becoming a ship propeller manufacturer as well. Since early the 20th century Escher Wyss has been one of the first licensees for the variable pitch Kaplan water turbine and its experience gained with this kind of hydraulic turbomachinery enables the company to develop the first reliable, hydraulically operated CP propeller in the world.
1956 License to Kawasaki Heavy Industries.
1969 Escher Wyss merges with Sulzer Brothers, Switzerland, a high technology corporation involved in a large number of industries including energy, textile machinery, chemical & medical engineering etc.
The resulting company is named Sulzer-Escher Wyss. The Sulzer Group employs more than 30.000 people all over the world.
1970 Controllable pitch propeller with air ejection system.
1973 World-wide most powerful controllable pitch propeller with 34.000 kW power.
1979 First 5-bladed controllable pitch propeller with "high skew".
1981 World-wide largest controllable pitch propeller with a diameter of 11 m.
1986 First semi-submerged controllable pitch propeller with 7 blades designed for a ship speed of up to 40 knots.
1987 First navy CP propeller with 7 blades. World-wide a unique achievement with an uninterrupted successful operation in navy service till today.
1992 Introduction of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the propeller design and application of state-of-the-art engineering tools.
1995 Sulzer-Escher Wyss is restructured into several independent business units. The water turbine and CP propeller activities are brought into the Sulzer Hydro Division.
2000 Sulzer Hydro is acquired by Voest Alpine Technologies Group (VA TECH), Austria.
The product group Controllable Pitch Propellers is entirely within the operational responsibility of the managing company ANDRITZ HYDRO GmbH in Ravensburg, Germany.
2006 VA TECH HYDRO was acquired by Andritz AG.
2009 VA TECH HYDRO was renamed to ANDRITZ HYDRO.
