Austria´s largest energy producer is "Verbund", a public company operating 123 power plants in seven of nine Austrian provinces and covering almost 50% of Austria's power consumption. The total firm power of all Verbund power plants is 8.9 GW, the mean output capacity (yearly average) of the hydropower stations is about 28 TWh. The major part of the hydropower capacity is bundled in the VERBUND-Austrian Hydro Power AG.
Verbund-Austrian Hydro Power AG is the owner of the first HYDROMATRIX® module in Austria, located at an active navigation lock on the Danube river. The development of the Freudenau site was a collaboration and a joint research project between Donaukraft, which was the former Verbund-Austrian Hydro Power and ANDRITZ HYDRO.
Verbund-Austrian Hydro Power AG is project partner of EVN and Wienstrom for the innovative HYDROMATRIX® project providing a small-scale hydropower plant at the intake of the Vienna Danube Canal in Nussdorf.

Energie AG is the leading infrastructure group of the federal province of Upper Austria. Electricity being its core business, Energie AG supplies electrical power via 410,000 customer installations to almost 1 million people in Upper Austria, parts of Salzburg, and Styria. Energie AG operates 34 hydropower plants for power generation with an overall output of 7,998 GWh in the 2000/2001 business year. Taking into consideration electricity purchases, hydropower accounts for 70% thereof. Employing a staff of 1,700, Energie AG generated a turnover of € 542 million in the electricity sector in 2001. Moreover, Energie AG is active in the fields of natural gas supply, district heating, waste disposal, telecommunication, water supply and wastewater treatment via numerous subsidiaries and affiliated companies.
The prototype for the Jebel Aulia HYDROMATRIX® power station in Sudan was tested in the Agonitz run-of-river power station on the Steyr river. The utility ENERGIE AG of Upper Austria provided ANDRITZ HYDRO with a water passage for the installation of a HYDROMATRIX® prototype.
Comprehensive in-depth tests combined with findings gained from trial operation provide data required for marketing new and innovative versions of the HYDROMATRIX® technology.
The success of the test series strengthened the cooperation links between the two companies where research and development of innovative solutions for hydraulic energy exploitation enjoy absolute priority.
As a result of the cooperation between ENERGIE AG and ANDRITZ HYDRO the first StrafloMatrix™ unit was connected to the grid in the Agonitz power station on the Steyr river in May 2004 and will be available for further development works as well as a demonstration unit for potential customers.
Both companies put great emphasis on continued research and development and vitally contribute to innovation in the field of hydropower utilisation.
The Agonitz project marks the continuation of a longstanding and successful cooperation between ENERGIE AG and ANDRITZ HYDRO, which originally started with the construction of Lambach power plant and has continued ever since by implementing innovative concepts for the benefit of hydropower.
Obermeyer Machinery Corp. the creator of the HYDROMATRIX® concept in 1987 in USA and VA TECH HYDRO - a world leader in the design and manufacturing of hydroelectric turbine-generator equipment - have joined resources to market the HYDROMATRIX® concept, a patent protected approach for low head hydroprojects.
The HYDROMATRIX® modules were optimized for specific projects together with the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering of the Technical University in Vienna. The success of the test series strengthened the cooperation links between the two companies where research and development of innovative solutions for hydraulic energy exploitation enjoy absolute priority.
