The following four main types are the most important application examples for the HYDROMATRIX® technology:
Navigation dams Large Lock & Dams navigational structures along a number of major rivers represent an ideal application opportunity for HYDROMATRIX®. Adding power production to these sites is in many cases very economically feasible, when the existing structure allows implementation of HYDROMATRIX®.
Irrigation dams
Many structures are existing for irrigation purposes worldwide, spilling water to agricultural areas on a regular basis. In many cases this is an ideal opportunity for HYDROMATRIX® application.

Sluice in shiplocks
Navigation river systems include dams and locks for ship transfer. Where an existing slot is available, a HYDROMATRIX® module can be installed for power generation. The turbine-generator units can be specifically designed to operate in both flow directions. Due to low operating heads feasibility has to be checked carefully.

Abandoned shiplocks
Due to increasing navigation and transport activities on major rivers the original shiplocks have become too small and new shiplocks were built. On the other hand on some rivers navigation has been stopped or the shiplocks are used only in very seldom cases, e.g. in flood situations. These old shiplocks would be ideal for a HYDROMATRIX® installation, if the head is more than about 4 meters (13 ft).
