Official inauguration of additional pumped storage power

On October 14, 2019 the new La Coche hydropower plant was officially inaugurated with a big ceremony by Jean-Bernard Lévy, Chairman and Chief Executive of the EDF Group and Mr. Wolfgang Semper, Member of the Executive Board of ANDRITZ and Managing Director of ANDRITZ Hydro, as well as Mr. Peter Magauer, Managing Director of ANDRITZ Hydro Ravensburg. The event was also attended by members of local government and representatives of the local and regional authorities.

In 2016 ANDRITZ received the order to supply a turbine generator unit for the extension of the La Coche pumped storage power station. The new Pelton turbine completes the existing four reversible pump turbines and features extremely good part load behavior. Due to the high sand content in the water and the resulting severe abrasion, the turbine has received a high-grade, erosion-resistant coating extending its life cycle significantly. Scope of contract for ANDRITZ comprised the design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning including excitation. Manufacturing and purchasing was solely done in Europe.

The most powerful hydro unit in France, the new unit will be able to provide 240 MW and has a wide operational range. It has one of the most efficient runners worldwide produced with MicroGuss technology. The turbine was coated with HVOF (SXH70) at ANDRITZ’ hydro manufacturing facility in Ravensburg, Germany. Transfer of the unit after finalization of wet commissioning, efficiency tests and two phases of trial runs is expected for January 2020. On the completion of the works the total installed capacity of the hydropower plant will be increased from 280 MW to 520 MW.

La Coche is the second biggest hydro project in France and plays a strategic role in balancing the power grid, more specifically supporting the integration of variable renewable-energy sources. With this extension, La Coche will now generate 20 % more renewable, flexible and storable energy annually meeting the electricity demand of about 270,000 people, approximately as much as a city like Strasbourg has residents.
