Powerful shredding helps recover valuable raw materials from rags

Pulper rags are a very demanding compound of metallic and non-metallic components. However, they are also an important source of secondary raw materials in waste paper recycling. ANDRITZ has the right shredding technology for treating the bulky rags and turning them into valuable fractions – ideally in a two-stage process.

For treating pulper rags, a two-stage process is recommended: First, the ANDRITZ Universal Rotary Shear UC reduces the size of the input material. Then, the ANDRITZ Universal Granulator UG – a fast-running shredder – cuts the material into very small particles.

This process stage perfectly loosens up the output material for subsequent removal of ferrous particles, resulting in a very clean metal fraction. Other separation technologies can be applied in order to recover more secondary materials, e.g. non-ferrous metals or substitute fuels.

Stage 1: Universal Rotary Shear UC

A slow-running, twin-shaft cutter reduces the size of the demanding input material by powerful pre-shredding.

Stage 2: Universal Granulator UG

A fast-running rotor cuts the pre-shredded material in interaction with the fixed stator knives to a size of less than 40 mm and loosens up the particles for further treatment.

As subsequent process step, an overband magnet is used to remove the ferrous particles – the remains of the steel wires used to hold waste paper bales in shape. The result is a metal fraction with very high cleanliness. Other separation technologies can be applied in order to recover more secondary materials, e.g. non-ferrous metals or substitute fuels.
