ANDRITZ selected for the next phase of the Mactaquac hydropower plant in Canada

2026/08/27

New Brunswick Power signed a contract with ANDRITZ, moving to the next phase of planning for the modernization of the six turbine-generator units with a total capacity of 666 MW at the Mactaquac hydropower plant in New Brunswick, Canada.

The modernization will help secure the long-term supply of renewable electricity in the province.

The engineering contract is included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026, with engineering and model testing planned for 2026. Notice to proceed with full project execution is expected in 2027.

Commissioned in 1968, the Mactaquac plant provides 30% of the province’s legislated renewable energy requirements and 20% of New Brunswick’s peak electrical capacity needs. The modernization will enhance the plant’s reliability and performance and is designed to help the plant reach its intended service life in line with the 2068 objective.

“Mactaquac is an important investment in New Brunswick’s energy future. Achieving the intended life of the station will help us continue to provide reliable, renewable electricity to New Brunswickers for decades to come. We look forward to working with ANDRITZ on this important project,” said Lori Clark, President and CEO of New Brunswick Power.

ANDRITZ’s scope includes new Kaplan runners, wicket gates, and other major turbine components. The new runners will feature advanced designs improving fish passage through the turbines.

The Mactaquac plant is located in Fredericton, on the Saint John (Wolastoq) River, within the Wolastoqey people’s territory. The project will create jobs and support local economic activity while helping ensure a reliable source of renewable electricity for New Brunswick residents.
