Van Robaeys Frères core business revolves around flax scutching, which involves separating fibers, wood, and seeds. Since the late 1970s, the company has ventured into cottonization along with ANDRITZ, utilizing short flax fibers for various applications. These cottonized flax fibers can then be used by their customers in blends with other fibers such as cotton, polyester and viscose for textiles, dollar paper production and the creation of composites.
When asked about their collaboration with ANDRITZ Laroche, Pierre D'Arras highlights their specific objectives: “Our main goal was to achieve maximum automation, enhancing productivity, and making the most out of our raw materials. With our ANDRITZ brand-new cottonizing line commissioned end of 2024, we are drastically increasing our production capacity”. "The advanced technology and custom solutions offered by ANDRITZ have enabled Van Robaeys Frères to optimize their processes, increasing their capability to produce high-quality fiber and achieve higher productivity. This partnership exemplifies our commitment to delivering tailored solutions that meet our clients' specific needs," adds Alexandre Butté (Vice President Engineered Textile & General Manager of ANDRITZ Laroche).

Pierre D'Arras explains “I would like to emphasize the importance of having the right spare parts in stock and optimizing future machines: something that ANDRITZ Laroche has made possible.” He adds “This relationship with ANDRITZ is a real win-win partnership, with both parties contributing ideas and innovations, developing new processes and sharing their mutual expertise. ANDRITZ's strength lies in its ability to deliver custom machines tailored to our needs, ensuring they meet our company's specific requirements.”
Looking to the future, Pierre D'Arras sees significant growth potential for Van Robaeys Frères, particularly in the use of short fibers, which he believes have immense potential. However, entering new markets will depend heavily on production capacities, as large-scale players in the textile industry require substantial volumes. Pierre D'Arras also envisions developments with other fibers, always combined with flax. The company is currently focused on increasing its production capacities and making strategic investments to support this growth. ANDRITZ and Van Robaeys Frères continuously conduct trials and engage in dedicated R&D sharing the capabilities and expertise of its unique technical center based in Cours - France, to boost innovations and productivity.
''We are very proud of our collaboration with ANDRITZ, for more than fifty years now. Both companies being based in France adds an important dimension to our relationship making the collaboration completely sensible. This enduring partnership, built over many years, is a crucial element for both parties moving forward" concludes D'Arras. "This win-win partnership allows us to create a more sustainable textile and nonwoven industry using flax, one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly natural fibers. We’ve been delighted to see our customer evolve and look forward to participating in his promising rise in the years to come.” says Alexis Gautier, Area Sales Manager at ANDRITZ.
