Reviving legacy excellence: Our service expertise in calender repair

Older calender models can be modernized to be revitalized to full performance

In the world of nonwoven and textile production, legacy calenders are more than just machines—they are the backbone of decades of innovation and reliability. At ANDRITZ Nonwoven & Textile, we understand the value of these time-tested systems and have built a reputation for breathing new life into them through expert repair, modernization, and service.

Not too old to (rock and) roll

One of our most recent success stories is the restoration of a Küsters calender originally built in the 1980s, a testament to our deep-rooted expertise and commitment to preserving industrial heritage. This calender, once a cornerstone of production, had aged gracefully but required a comprehensive overhaul to meet today’s performance standards. Our team at ANDRITZ Küsters GmbH in Krefeld, Germany, took on the challenge with precision and passion.

The repair involved:

  • Complete disassembly and inspection of the calender rolls and mechanical components.
  • Replacement of outdated systems, including the hot water heating unit, with modern, trouble-free successors.
  • Functional testing on our advanced test bench, ensuring the refurbished calender met current operational benchmarks.
  • On-site support and responsive service, minimizing downtime and ensuring seamless reintegration into production

This project is part of our broader initiative to support Ramisch-Kleinewefers and Küsters legacy calenders, offering tailored rebuilds and upgrades that enhance productivity, reliability, and machine availability

Customer Visit Highlight: KAYSER Filtertech at ANDRITZ Küsters

A key milestone in this project was the visit of KAYSER Filtertech GmbH to the ANDRITZ Küsters workshop in Krefeld for the final acceptance of the refurbished calender. Originally delivered in 1985 in the classic green design, the machine underwent a full modernization to align with today’s technological standards.

Present during the acceptance were Stefan Jutz and Antonio Scotese from KAYSER Filtertech, accompanied by Anne Schmenk, Project Manager at ANDRITZ, who ensured all specifications were met with precision and professionalism.

The overhaul included:

  • A complete redesign of the drive system, hydraulics, and electrical controls, including a new PLC.
  • An in-house refurbishment of the S-Roll, the heart of the calender.
  • A successful functional test on the ANDRITZ test bench, confirming performance and reliability.

This visit not only marked the technical success of the project but also reinforced the strong collaboration between ANDRITZ and its customers. The rebuild was later featured in internal and external communications, including LinkedIn and Viva Engage posts, showcasing the engineering excellence and customer-centric approach that define ANDRITZ Küsters.
