ANDRITZ offers a selection of different technologies for biomass drying

A biomass drying plant normally starts with the infeed of chips or sawdust. The drying plant typically consists of heat generation, drying, and air pollution control. The heat generation can come from hot gases, steam, or hot water. ANDRITZ is well equipped to supply turnkey biomass drying plants.

Drying technologies

ANDRITZ offers several different technologies to match the application and heat source available. The different technologies are:

  • Rotary drum
  • Belt dryer
  • Pneumatic
  • Fluidbed

Hot gas generation

For rotary drum dryers, hot gas generation is normally used. The main gas generation technology is a step grate furnace using wet biomass. Alternatively, a cyclonic furnace can be used depending on available biomass for heating.

Steam, hot water, hot oil, or flue gases

In the cases where energy for the drying is available from other sources, ANDRITZ will recommend steam, hot water, or hot oil. In cases where large amount of flue gases are available, these can be utilized as well.

Air pollution control

When required, the ANDRITZ drying plant also includes an air pollution control system. Depending on local regulations, there are different technologies to achieve the limits for particulate reduction and reduced VOC, CO and NOx.

Research and development

ANDRITZ drying technologies are developed and different materials tested in the company’s R&D facilities in Austria, Sweden, and Germany.
