Efficiency without compromise

Refiner Exchange at Mondi Neusiedler

ANDRITZ and Mondi achieved higher capacity, stable quality, and lower costs with the
Refiner Exchange Concept. Mondi Neusiedler’s Kematen operation in Austria is a mill with a
long history and fresh ideas. Like its Theresienthal sister mill just 10 minutes away, it has been
producing specialty papers for more than 150 years.

The mill manufactures highly regarded, specialized uncoated fine papers in sheets and reels, including well‑known brands such as PERGRAPHICA premium printing papers. Kematen’s output includes more than a thousand grades in over 50 colors, with basis weights ranging from 40 to 400 gsm. End‑use markets include laminated papers, book papers, sticky notes, colored copier papers, and, at the heavier end, greeting cards and luxury packaging.

Project scope and highlights

  • Replacing six existing refiners with only three, while maintaining full capacity for two paper machines (PM3 & PM4).
  • Upgrading a 26'' refiner to a high-capacity 34'' TFC (TwinFlo Customized) unit - tailor-made to fit on the existing foundation and reuse the current motor.
  • Reconfiguring the refining layout to support wide product diversity and future production demands.
  • Installing the new system in just two days, keeping downtime extremely low.
  • Maintaining Mondi's qualty requirements for specialty fine papers across more than 1.000 grades.

Why it's a good concept

  • ANDRITZ delivered a custom TFC refiner that fit within the mill’s existing installation—no new building, no motor replacement, no expanded foundations.
  • The new 34'' TFC refiner enables significant energy reductions, directly supporting Mondi's Sustainability roadmap
  • Cutting the number of refiners from six to three results in lower maintenance effort, fewer spare parts, reduced complexity and lower overall running costs.
  • The TFC concept allowed Mondi to reuse connections, piping and drivetrain elements. Operators now benefit from smarter maintenance features such as:
    • Swing door
    • Drop-in bearing unit
    • Rotor-changing device
    • Optimized sealing accessibility
  • ANDRITZ provided unique refining simulations to determine the ideal refiner size, ensuring performance at all prodcution scenarios.
