Smart Fiberline Quality Tracking solution covers all Metsä Fibre pulp and bioproduct mills in Finland

2026/06/09

Success story article

The analytics solution Smart Fiberline Quality Tracking has been installed to Metsä Fibre Kemi Bioproduct Mill, eventually covering all Metsä Fibre pulp and bioproduct mills in Finland. The solution has a successful history in Metsä Fibre Rauma, Äänekoski, and Joutseno Mills, and therefore, Metsä Fibre completes its latest Bioproduct Mill in Kemi with the quality tracking solution.

Smart Fiberline Quality Tracking provides real-time estimates of fiber strength and bonding. The impact of process variables is modelled as changes in pulping yield and converted to Fiber Online Index (FOX) depending on their magnitude, duration, and variability. The software provides a prediction of pulp quality, and operators can affect it by optimizing the process variables.

Traditionally, these measurements are carried out in a laboratory, leading to delays and additional costs. ANDRITZ solution provides an immediate forecast of pulp quality, and the possibility to influence process variables proactively, leading to maximized pulping yield, improved pulp quality, high and stable production quality, and improved customer experience.

“Smart Fiberline Quality Tracking gives us a clearer view of process performance and supports our daily work in following pulp quality development. It brings additional transparency to the fiberline and creates a stronger basis for discussions around process optimization,” Johanna Rautala, Senior Manager, Operational Excellence, Metsä Fibre.

“The implementation of Smart Fiberline Quality Tracking at Kemi progressed well, and the solution is now part of our daily operations. It provides valuable support for process follow-up and helps strengthen our overall understanding of the factors affecting fiberline performance and pulp quality,” Juho Lyytikäinen, Operations Manager Metsä Fibre Kemi Bioproduct Mill.

“From ANDRITZ' point of view, the implementation of the Smart Fiberline Quality Tracking solution at Kemi was a smooth and prompt project. The collaboration between ANDRITZ and Metsä Fibre was truly outstanding, characterized by open communication and a shared commitment to excellence. This efficiency was made possible thanks to the valuable reference provided by the successful deployment at the Äänekoski Bioproduct Mill, as well as Metsä Fibre’s comprehensive knowledge of the solution. This partnership enabled us to achieve a successful outcome that benefits both parties”, Saara Aksola, Project Engineer, Smart Products and Solutions, concludes.
