Matt Hartley

Sales Manager for Service & Rehab in Charlotte, ANDRITZ Hydropower United States

From the beginning, I have been incredibly proud to be part of ANDRITZ Hydropower, not only because we work in energy, but because we drive innovation in renewable energy. In today’s rapidly evolving world, it feels reassuring to be part of an industry that has stood strong for over a century and will continue to play a vital role for generations to come.

Personally, I have always loved water and the mountains, two things that naturally go hand in hand with hydropower.

Over the years, I have been lucky to travel and/or work on some breathtaking project sites across the country. Just to name a few, these include Hoover, Grand Coulee, Bad Creek, Taum Sauk, Helms, and Bear Swamp. One unforgettable trip even had me landing in a seaplane in Alaska to a remote island. These experiences are more than just work; they are lasting memories.

At ANDRITZ, I have had the opportunity to follow projects from the sales phase through execution. It is truly rewarding to see what we accomplish as a team, especially when we bring critical units back online. In addition, some of the equipment we handle is massive, and just coordinating the logistics can be impressive. I am always amazed by how fast our teams mobilize, sometimes within just a few days, to respond to urgent customer needs. That kind of fast-paced, high-impact problem-solving is exactly what engineers like me love to take on.

In addition to the technical side, I also value the people I work with. Throughout my career, I have built strong working relationships with major public and private utilities across the US. I also collaborate with some of the brightest and most dedicated colleagues from around the world.

Since my early days at ANDRITZ, global connectivity has changed a lot. When I started, I used a BlackBerry, used paper maps to find project sites with no cell service and had to learn how a fax machine worked. Now, with tools like Microsoft Teams, I can quickly connect with colleagues around the world. It makes decision-making faster and communication smoother, bringing us all closer to the #1ANDRITZWay.

And of course, Austria as our global headquarters is the cherry on top. It is a beautiful country and a truly inspiring base for a company with such a proud legacy.

Today, I can say that working at ANDRITZ is both challenging and deeply meaningful. It is fulfilling work and something I am proud to be part of every single day.

I started my journey with ANDRITZ as an intern, while I was finishing college at UNC Charlotte. Starting from the ground up helped me build a strong foundation and shaped the way I connect with younger colleagues today. I know what it feels like to be new, to learn, and to grow. I’ve been in their shoes, and that gives me a real sense of mentorship and purpose.

Over the past 15 years, I have worked in nearly every sales-related role across the company. But thanks to ANDRITZ, my experience goes far beyond sales. I’ve had the chance to grow in many areas:

  • Project management
  • Commercial management
  • Legal review of terms and conditions
  • Finance
  • Engineering and problem-solving

These experiences have made me more versatile and confident in my professional decisions.

Throughout my career, ANDRITZ has also supported me with many training opportunities. Some of these took place in amazing locations in Europe, which made the learning experience even more memorable. These trainings have helped me grow, not only in my career, but also in my communication, leadership, and perspective.

Personally, one of the biggest impacts has been the chance to travel. ANDRITZ has taken me all over the U.S., as well as to different countries in North America and Europe. That exposure to different cultures, ways of working, and people has truly changed the way I see the world. I’ve made friendships across the ANDRITZ global network, and I’ve developed a deeper understanding of how collaboration works on a global scale.

Today, I continue to grow, both professionally and personally, thanks to the people I work with and the challenges I get to solve every day. ANDRITZ has shaped not only the engineer I am, but also the person I’ve become.
