Norske Skog Skogn selects ANDRITZ technology to start book paper production
Norske Skog Skogn is preparing to enter the European book paper market supported by a comprehensive technology package developed in collaboration with international technology group ANDRITZ.
This solution will enable the conversion of Paper Machine 1 (PM1) to flexibly produce both newsprint and the new NOR Book grade. Norske Skog aims to become one of the top three suppliers of wood-containing book paper in Europe. Start-up is planned for the second quarter of 2026.
The project includes technological and digital upgrades that will allow the mill to produce over 140,000 t/a, with the ability to shift production between newsprint and book paper. As the technology and equipment partner, ANDRITZ will deliver a tailored package to rebuild the existing calender including:
- PrimeRoll MHV – a hydraulically controlled self-loading roll, designed for highly even paper profiles and reduced energy consumption, as it is operated without the need for thermal heating.
- ANDRITZ Multi Master Control System – a digital control and automation system that ensures stable operations, high-quality output, and production flexibility.
The performance and reliability of the roll technology were validated through extensive trials at the ANDRITZ Paper Technology Center in Krefeld, Germany. In addition, ANDRITZ performed pre-engineering on-site and collaborated closely with Norske Skog to ensure optimal integration into PM1 and consistent quality in both newsprint and book paper modes.

Norske Skog Skogn’s switch to 100% virgin fiber in 2024 allows the use of high-quality thermo-mechanical pulp, enabling production of bright and bulky book paper grades. Coupled with the mill’s exceptionally low CO₂ emissions, the new NOR Book product offers a sustainable alternative in the wood-containing book paper market.

The value of the order will not be disclosed. It is included in ANDRITZ’s order intake in the second quarter of 2025.
