Decarbonization

ANDRITZ is committed to addressing climate change by aligning our targets and reduction strategies with global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5 °C. Our approach is guided by internationally recognized frameworks, ensuring transparent governance and measurable progress toward a low-carbon future.

Our commitment and performance

Decarbonization is one of the key focus areas in ANDRITZ’s Sustainability Program 2030. We commit to accelerating decarbonization across our operations and value chain.

We have adopted a science-based climate strategy aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C pathway, underpinned by our 2030 climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets form a cornerstone of our Sustainability Program 2030, with the first two officially validated by SBTi.

In 2025, our progress in emissions reduction is strong. It should be noted that reductions through 2030 will not follow a linear trajectory. For example, value chain emissions (Scope 3) fluctuate during the years based on annual project deliveries.

*This includes emissions generated directly by the company as well as emissions from electricity and heat sourced from suppliers.

**The scope 1 and 2 figure, representing 104.8 ktCO2e as absolute GHG emissions, includes energy certificate –related risk adjustment. Without this adjustment, Scope 1 and 2 reduction would be ‑35%, as detailed in the third-party audited 2025 CSRD report.

*** These emissions include, among others, the energy consumed during the lifetime operation of machinery and systems delivered by ANDRITZ, outlining a considerable part of the company’s total emissions.

Climate governance

At ANDRITZ, we integrate climate responsibility across all levels of the organization to ensure accountability, transparency, and meaningful action. This commitment starts at the board level and is embedded throughout the company. Our climate governance structure mirrors our broader sustainability governance framework, reinforcing a unified and strategic approach.

Key decarbonization levers

Low carbon electricity

A critical lever across ANDRITZ’s emissions scopes is the transition to renewable and other low-carbon energy sources. In its own operations, this includes switching to renewable electricity and installing photovoltaic (PV) systems at company sites to generate clean energy.

Low-carbon materials

Transitioning to low-carbon materials will further support ANDRITZ’s decarbonization efforts. Key actions include engaging suppliers to identify lower-carbon raw materials and increasing the share of secondary raw materials to minimize resource extraction and energy use.

Energy efficiency

Enhancing energy efficiency is another core decarbonization lever. We embed energy and resource efficiency into product design and manufacturing processes. Products are developed to minimize energy use throughout their lifecycle, integrating energy-saving technologies and enabling renewable energy solutions where feasible. For example, ANDRITZ is implementing energy-monitoring systems to track and optimize consumption, conducting energy assessments at key operational locations to identify improvement opportunities, and upgrading building infrastructure, such as insulation, windows, and lighting, to reduce energy demand.

Fuel shift

ANDRITZ recognizes the long-term potential of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and is actively exploring opportunities to transition production processes and heating systems to electric alternatives.

We focus on our own electricity production

Our locations are switching to solar energy for their electricity production and are installing large photovoltaic (PV) plants to produce their own green electricity. 20 locations already cover some of their electricity requirements with their own PV systems, and several more will follow in the coming months. The PV systems in operation at ANDRITZ sites in Austria, Brazil, China, Croatia, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Romania, Spain, and Switzerland have a total installed capacity of around 12 GW peak per year. This represents approximately 4% of the Group’s electricity needs.

Alignment with global standards and regulations

In addition to our validated SBTi targets, we align our efforts with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The framework’s core elements – governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets – form the foundation of the European Sustainability Reporting Standard (ESRS E1) and are reported in our Non-Financial Statement. These pillars underpin our climate strategy and disclosure practices. Additionally, our sustainability disclosures, including climate-related information, have been subject to third-party assurance, with the assurance statement included in our Non-Financial Statement in accordance with CSRD and ESRS requirements.
