Natural resources

ANDRITZ ensures responsible use of natural resources by integrating water stewardship and sustainable waste management into our operations and solutions. We focus on reducing water consumption, improving efficiency, and minimizing waste to landfill to support sustainable production and resource conservation.

Our commitment and performance

At ANDRITZ, safeguarding natural resources is a cornerstone of our Sustainability Program 2030. We strive to protect water resources and minimize waste, ensuring responsible use of the planet’s finite materials.

Water Stewardship

Water is one of the planet’s most precious resources, and we take responsibility for using it wisely. Through our water target we are committed to reducing water consumption on ANDRITZ’s sites that are in the water-scarce location. By prioritizing these areas, we ensure that our efforts have the greatest impact where it matters most.

To achieve our target, we are introducing smart water meters for real-time monitoring, improving processes to detect and fix leaks quickly, and investing in systems that allow water to be reused, recycled, and even harvested from rain. These measures help us reduce water intake and embed circular water management principles across our operations.

Managing water risks

Water risk management is a key part of our sustainability strategy.

Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)

In addition to reducing consumption, we recognize the social dimension of water. . Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is fundamental to human health and well-being. Guided by our Environmental Policy, we are committed to promoting high water quality and responsible water management, including supporting access to WASH wherever possible.

Waste Management

All manufacturing locations operate under a structured waste management concept based on the waste hierarchy – prioritizing prevention, reuse, recycling and recovery, and minimizing the last option, disposal. By increasing recycling rates and reducing landfill, we not only lower emissions and disposal costs but also contribute to a circular economy. Hazardous waste is handled with the utmost care through certified partners, in full compliance with local regulations.

Turning waste into value through circular solutions

Every year, around 7,000 tonnes of paper machine clothing are incinerated in Europe, even though the materials still have value, resulting in lost resources and unnecessary CO₂ emissions.

With the ANDRITZ Paper Machine Clothing (PMC) recycling program, we help our customers turn paper machine clothing waste into a valuable resource by building a reliable closed‑loop material system that keeps high‑quality materials in use. Through the program, forming fabrics and press felts are collected directly from paper mills, after which the materials are recycled in accordance with national regulations. The recovered materials can be reused as secondary raw materials, helping to reduce the need for virgin materials while ensuring quality and performance.

The service reduces emissions and non-recycled waste while supporting circular economy goals and credible sustainability reporting, empowering our customers to take a leading role in the green transition.
