NCG treatment for odorous compound removal

ANDRITZ Non-Condensable Gas (NCG) treatment options

Modern technology and procedures are vital today in order for a mill to reduce the odors it emits into the atmosphere. NCG collection and elimination plays a critical role in helping a pulp mill meet strict environmental regulations as well as being a good neighbor in the surrounding community. ANDRITZ has developed effective solutions for NCG mitigation.

Recovering and treating mill gases to avoid odor

The kraft pulping process creates some odorous compounds, generated as by-products, which must be captured and eliminated to meet environmental and societal demands. These odorous compounds (Non-Condensable Gases or NCG) are what remain after the gases have been cooled and the heavier components have condensed to liquid.

There are many sources of NCG in a mill.  Some sources emit a small, but highly concentrated amount (Concentrated NCG or CNCG), while others emit large volumes with low concentrations (Dilute NCG or DNCG).

Capturing these compounds to avoid their release to the atmosphere is a challenge. Yet, the reward can be significant.  Not only are mill odors controlled, but treating and recovering NCG can yield a “fuel” with significant heating value.
