Gascogne Papier PM7

Europe’s widest MG paper machine with world record steel Yankee

ANDRITZ has received an order from Gascogne Papier, France, to supply a complete PrimeLine MG paper production line. The centerpiece of this project is the largest PrimeDry steel Yankee ever built, with a diameter of 26 ft (7.9 m) – a world record!

About the project

The new paper machine, with a web width of 6.8 m and a design speed of 1,300 m/min, will be the world's widest MG paper machine, producing basis weights from 120 to 25 gsm using 100% softwood unbleached kraft pulp.

With a capacity of 125,000 t/a, it will set a new industry benchmark for uncoated MG papers. The ANDRITZ MG line replaces three of the mill’s four paper machines to create a multi-grade production line capable of producing more than 80 different paper grades (ribbed and unribbed).

At a glance:

  • Key forming section components: adjustable table, low-intensity hybrid former
  • ANDRITZ transfer-belt application for efficiency
  • Complete stock preparation line
  • PrimeLine MG paper machine
  • Machine clothing, basic and detail engineering, control system, motors, and drives

The World’s Giant: PrimeDry Steel Yankee

We take pride in being the technology leader for large steel Yankees. Over the years, we’ve delivered more than 80 PrimeDry Steel Yankees worldwide, and more than 30 of them fall in the large size range. The steel Yankee that is to be installed at Gascogne Papier in France not only falls into the large size category but will be the largest of them all.

The steel Yankee to be installed at Gascogne Papier promises to redefine energy-efficient drying while ensuring safe operation. It will be assembled on site using a unique engineering, manufacturing, and logistics concept. ANDRITZ is the first supplier worldwide to deliver a Yankee of this size.

ANDRITZ PrimeDry Steel Yankees not only outperform their cast iron counterparts with a 10 - 15% higher evaporation rate, but also provide an increase in machine performance. They offer exceptional safety and efficiency, making them the preferred choice for companies like Gascogne Papier.

About Gascogne Paper

Gascogne Papier is a long-standing specialist in unbleached natural kraft paper and an internationally recognized player in the specialty paper market.

Using maritime pine wood from the Landesde Gascogne forest, Gascogne Papier sources its main raw material within a radius of 60 km on average. Since being established by silviculturists almost 100 years ago, the company has aimed to develop the wood resource entirely within the Group.

Thanks to the installation of a new MG paper machine providing state-of-the-art technologies that enable it to make significant improvements in terms of performance and environmental efficiency, Gascogne can now not only meet the expectations of its customers and society, but also continue to make a contribution to reducing the environmental impacts of its activities. Since the installation of a biomass boiler in 2016, the Group has reduced its fossil CO2 emissions by nearly 70% and the paper mill now obtains 86% of its energy from biomass.

The kraft papers from their mill in Mimizan cover a huge range of products from baking paper to multi-media layers used to manufacture bags, as well as in the carbon fiber manufacturing process, including barrier papers, decorative papers, and much more.
